How to Memorize Ingress Glyphs: Tips and Tricks
From level 7 (sometimes earlier) Ingress agents start running short of inventory — mods, bursters, Ultra Strikes — and that’s where glyphs come to the rescue ![]()
Ingress glyphs are mysterious symbols, each with its own shape and name (sometimes even several names).
An example of a level 6 or 7 portal hack — you need to enter 4 glyphs.
Tips for glyph hacking:
1. Enter all the symbols correctly — you’ll get a bigger bonus and points for the Translator medal.
2. Speed also adds to the bonus, but point 1 matters most: one mistake and it’s not the same (although you’ll still get more than with no glyphs at all).
3. You can undo a wrongly drawn glyph and redraw it (this button was added not long ago — very handy).
4. A trick: if you blanked on a symbol, got distracted or hesitated, and you’re still within portal range, it’s better to redo the hack. Just lock the screen with the power button and unlock it — the hack is interrupted and you can start it again without the cooldown.
5. Glyphs have names, and these names form meaningful sentences — for example, Shapers – Past – Present – Future.
6. Because of point 5, it makes sense to memorize the glyphs’ original English names. That makes entering them easier and you’ll get better at it.
7. There are glyph tables — you can print one and learn a few at a time.
8. You can practice with glyph trainers if you don’t have home portals nearby (I didn’t like this method much, but it’s not bad).
9. There are sites with glyph lessons; I liked this one:
