Many system administrators use the trafshow utility to analyze network activity, in particular to quickly find out who is eating up the bandwidth.

I have written before about trafshow on FreeBSD; now it is Debian Linux’s turn :-)

Those who rushed into battle with apt-get install trafshow were defeated, because at the time trafshow was not a separate package — it came inside a package with a set of utilities.

trafshow is part of the netdiag package

The command to install trafshow:

apt-get install netdiag

On current Debian releases first check whether there is a package of its own: apt search trafshow.

Other useful tools

You can also install iftop and nload, which are useful for watching who is talking to whom:

apt-get install iftop nload
