If you’ve just started experimenting with the VMware ESXi hypervisor, you may not have heard of VMware Tools yet.

VMware Tools

VMware Tools is essential — it provides the drivers for guest operating systems.

PCI\VEN_15AD&DEV_0740 is the VMware VMCI Bus Device (Virtual Machine Communication Interface). VEN_15AD is VMware.

To get the driver for pci\ven_15ad&dev_0740, just install VMware Tools in the guest. It’s quick and easy:

  1. Start the guest VM and log in.
  2. In the vSphere client choose Guest OS → Install VMware Tools (the VM needs a virtual CD/DVD drive — add one if you removed it). The VMware Tools disc image is mounted in the guest.
  3. Run the installer from that disc like any normal application.
  4. Reboot when it finishes — and that’s it.

After that there are no more missing drivers for your virtual devices (VMCI, SVGA video, VMXNET3 network, PVSCSI and so on).

You can also download VMware Tools separately from the Broadcom (VMware) support portal if the menu option isn’t available.
