Notes about the world around us and a personal knowledge base — Antonio Nemcd’s blog
The stag beetle is the largest beetle in Europe and probably the most recognizable one. Its famous “antlers” are actually hugely enlarged upper jaws (mandibles) that males use to fight each other over females and the best spots on trees.
If you have never seen a stag beetle in real life, you could easily walk past without noticing that one decorates the gates of Kharkiv’s Gorky Park — now called Central Park. The gates with the beetle are on the side closer to the Naukova metro station.
It’s a beautiful beetle, you could even call it elite: it is said to bring good luck, and it looks just right on the park gates.
