HP 2000 Laptop Wi-Fi Driver for Windows 7 (Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565)
I had to spend some time finding a working Wi-Fi driver for an HP 2000 laptop. Windows 7 reported that it could not find drivers for the network card and Wi-Fi, so it was up to me. Time to search.
Two ways to find the driver
You can go two ways. First: find out the name and model of the Wi-Fi module and look for the driver on the module maker’s site. Second: find the driver by laptop model on the laptop maker’s site — but even then you need to know roughly which Wi-Fi module you have, so you pick the right one, because laptops of the same series can have different Wi-Fi modules. There is also a third way, using some driver-scanner program, but that’s not our method.
So let’s start with the hardware ID in Device Manager.
VEN_168C&DEV_0036 corresponds to the Qualcomm Atheros AR9000 Series adapter.
With laptops, I like to download the original drivers from the manufacturer’s site. It’s more reliable: the manufacturer should have tested the device with the driver it publishes, so everything should be stable (in theory).
To do that, find out the laptop model: look at the labels on the bottom of the laptop. In my case there were no labels, so I entered the BIOS (press Escape when the laptop starts, then F10) and copied the model, F2U43EA. Some manufacturers, such as Acer, also have a utility that shows all the information about the laptop: model, serial number and so on.
On the HP site I chose Laptops, entered F2U43EA and selected the operating system and version. The choice was small — only 8 and 8.1, no Windows 7 
— so I took the Windows 8 one, downloaded it and was surprised to see that it didn’t help! (Usually that works, especially as the package said Windows 7 as well.)
I had to dig around HP’s site for similar models with the same module. In the end I found a driver that fit and worked: sp63802.
