Restoring a DMG Image: “Could Not Find Any Scan Information” — Fix

Problem: when you create a bootable disk or USB drive in Mac OS with Disk Utility, you may get this message:
“Restore Failure. Could not find any scan information. You need to scan the source image before you can restore it.”

Solution: select the .dmg image in the list on the left and choose Images → Scan Image for Restore from Disk Utility’s top menu.

Scan Image for Restore in Mac OS Disk Utility

The scan takes a few minutes — it checks the image and writes checksum information into it. After that, restoring to the USB drive or disk works without the error.

The same thing in Terminal

If Disk Utility can’t manage it, you can scan the image with this command (replace the path with your file):

sudo asr imagescan --source ~/Desktop/image.dmg

If the scan fails

  • Most likely the image didn’t download completely or is damaged — download it again.
  • Make sure there’s enough free space on the disk.
